Short-term Medical Coverage There are times in life when you just need coverage to fill a temporary gap. Short-term medical (STM), or temporary, coverage may be the perfect option. Its advantages are that it can be put into place very quickly, often as soon as midnight at the end of the day of application. It is relatively inexpensive and qualifying is simple and straightforward - as few as 3 - 5 questions on the application. If the applicant can answer 'no' to the health questions and meet citizenship or residency requirement (if there are any), coverage is automatic. However, keep in mind that short-term medical (STM) coverage does not cover pre-existing conditions and that there is no coverage for routine wellness visits. Personally, I feel STM is best used when the end-date for need is known. It's a good choice while waiting for a regular major medical plan to kick in. It can be a great filler for the last 6 - 12 months before someone becomes eligible for Medicare, or during a new-employee waiting period when the date coverage will begin is known. | Feel free to contact me and let's talk about whether short-term coverage is a good option for you!
